John Watson was on of the world's leading authorities on dragonflies (Odonata). After studying the hormonal development of insects at the University of Cambridge and three years on the staff of the Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, he returned to Australia in 1966. He joined the staff of CSIRO Division of Entomology, becoming Australia's expert on the taxonomy, biology and ecology of termites. In the 1960s he collaborated with Günther Theischinger on the description of Australia's dragonflies, studying their taxonomy, morphology, larval biology and potential role as biological indicators. Watson served on the Standards Association of Australia Committee on termite treatments and a number of other committees on termites and other entomological matters. He was a member of the editorial boards of Australian Journal of Zoology, Odonatologica and Notulae odonatologicae, and was active in the in Societatis Internationalis Odonatologica.
